It was my first week of school with kids and guess what? I got infected by those "carrier monkeys" I call my students. Several children were leaking green goop from their nose and a few more sneezing without covering their mouths, their contagious germs were bound to infest my body and take over...but, what else is new?
Anywho, I have to say that this year I have been more prepared and ready for students than any other year. However, the first day was more exhausting and scary than any other year. I realized after evaluating that first day that I had not properly prepared the environment according to my students'ages...which majority of them were brand new three year olds, which i guess I kind of dismissed and thought of my class last year, comprising mostly of 4-5 year olds.
Well, you can imagine that every little item was thrown, chewed on, and nearly destroyed by the curious and excited preschoolers. So, after school I rearranged the shelves, removed several activities that should be introduced later in the year, and added a couple of more appropriate "jobs" for my students. The next 2 days were a complete difference. After one day of going through the routines of the class, they were catching on. It was much more peaceful and constructive. They were much more settled and not as distracted by all the age IN-appropriate activities on the shelves. My assistant and I were so thrilled that we were able to evaluate and change the class according to the needs and abilities of the kids. I am stoked about this year and what other fun opportunities it will bring.
I do have to say that my favorite part of the day was when one of my 3 yr old boys started to use the broom (child length) as a sword. I almost got beheaded...However, after I intervened and showed him how to use the broom to sweep junk into the little 1 foot by 1 foot taped square on the floor- Use the dustpan to collect it all-Then dump it in the garbage- I've never been happier watching him copy my exact movements and complete the whole task. He was so proud of himself. That is one the greatest rewards in teaching...showing students how to become successful, useful, and independent. Good times.

Miss Brie I am so proud of you. I avoided getting sick this year (I think it's the vitamins) but everyone is dripping green crap. What is that about? I'm excited that your classroom is a bit of heaven on earth. Best of luck with your friends.
I wish my kids could be in your class!
oh i cant believe you can handle 3 year olds! one at a time for me! i can barely get through the day without hurting a bunch of 7 year olds!
i bet you are the coolest teacher. all day surrounded by three year olds must really take it's toll though. is this going to scar you and make you never want to have your own little carrier monkeys?
and can i say that i love reading words like "anywho" and "boyf" on your blog. i can just hear you saying them and it makes me happy.
